India's wheat output will likely rise 4.6% year-over-year to 90.83 million tonnes in 2012, agriculture minister Sharad Pawar said on April 23, The Times of India reported the same day.
In 2011, India produced 86.87 million tonnes of wheat.
On March 30, Agricultural Secretary Shri Prabeer Kumar Basu predicted that India’s total 2011/2012 wheat output could hit 90 million tonnes—a record high—contingent on favorable weather patterns.
Basu said that India’s 2011/2012 rice crop would likely hit 103.41 million tonnes, while the country’s total grain output will likely be 252.56 million tonnes.
India is the second largest wheat producer in the world. Annually, it consumes roughly 76 million tonnes of wheat.
