The Home Depot is planning to build a million-square-food distribution center in McDonough, Ga., to support its online business, the Atlanta Business Chronicle reported March 29, citing people familiar with the situation.
The company confirmed that it hoped to open such a center within 18 months at the soonest, but had not signed a lease.
The center would employ up to 300, according to sources, the newspaper reported.
Home Depot's online revenue has grown an average of 8% per year over the past five years while revenue at its stores fell an average of 5% a year, according to research firm IBISWorld.
The move comes as Home Depot's online revenues grew at an average annual rate of about 8 percent in the past five years, while traditional store revenues declined 5 percent annually in the same period, according to research from IBISWorld, a Los Angeles-based research firm.
