According to market researcher Kantar WorldPanel, Tesco Plc.’s market share of the U.K. grocery sector fell 0.4 percentage points year-over-year to 30.2% during the 12-week period that ended on March 18 while Asda’s market share rose 0.6 percentage points to a record 17.9%, Reuters reported March 27.
During this period, Tesco’s and Asda’s sales grew, respectively, 2.7% and 7.8%, while the overall market grew 4.0%.
Kantar WorldPanel announced the market share results on March 27, 10 days after Tesco released details for a new program that included hiring 20,000 new employees in addition to planned investments in both new and existing stores.
During the 12-week period that ended March 18, J Sainsbury Plc. and Wm Morrison Supermarkets Plc., the third and fourth largest grocers in Britain, respectively, had a market share of 16.6% and 12.3%, identical to the previous quarter.
Upmarket grocery chain Waitrose Ltd. (4.4% market share, up from 4.3% in 2011, with a sales growth of 6.7%), discount chains Aldi Stores Inc. (2.6% market share, up from 2.1% in 2011, with 28.5% sales growth) and Lidl Ltd. (2.7% market share, up from 2.5% in 2011, with 10.7% sales growth) and frozen foods specialist Iceland Foods Ltd. (2.0% market share, up from 1.9% in 2011, with 10.2% sales growth) all outperformed the overall grocery market in terms of growth.
During the 12-week period that ended on Feb. 19, the U.K.’s overall grocery market grew 4.5%. The grocery inflation rate was 5.5%
