The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is encouraging local and village councils throughout the Philippines to pass ordinances that would cut the use of plastics and polystyrene (PS) packaging, the Manila Bulletin Publishing Corp. reported Feb. 6.
According to MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino, the packaging, which is typically used for food items, tends to clog the metropolitan waterways, including drainage canals and creeks.
On Feb. 6, Tolentino led a cleanup initiative that cleared garbage and debris from estuaries and creeks.
