According to a new report by market research firm Freedonia, U.S. demand for alternative sweeteners will rise 3.3% annually through 2015, BevNet.com reported Jan. 3.
The increase is due largely to greater market penetration and use of the stevia extract rebiana-A, the report stated.
The alternative sweetener market will reach US$1.4 billion in sales within three years and high intensity sweeteners — which include aspartame and sucralose — will keep their places as the largest selling products within the category, the report said.
Consumer trends toward consumption of less processed ingredients will drive the growth of sweeteners that can be marketed as “natural”, the report stated, adding that the products in this category will achieve the fastest growth and generate the most interest among beverage manufacturers and consumers.
