Proposed Senate Bill 176 would expand Vermont’s bottle deposit-return bill to cover all drinks except milks, Plastics News reported Dec. 19.
The bill, which has been prefiled for the 2012 session, would require a 5-cent deposit for carbonated and noncarbonated drinks, and a 15-cent deposit for liquor and wine.
Additionally, beverage manufacturers and distributors would need to pay the state the value of unclaimed deposits if the bill passes. Currently, that amounts to more than US$2 million.
For containers currently covered by the bottle law, Vermont has an 85% recycling rate.
