International Paper Co. has decided to extend the layoff of 87 workers at its Shorewood Packaging plant in Indianapolis, Indiana, due to a “major” customer canceling product orders, reported the Indianapolis Business Journal on Nov. 28.
The layoff will be extended “well into the second quarter” from a previous end date of soon after the first of the year, stated Memphis, Tennessee-based International Paper in a notice posted Wednesday by the Indiana Dept. of Workforce Development.
The 87 employees -- over two-thirds of whom were classified as “general factory” and the rest, as specialists in such jobs as diecutting and prepress -- were laid off as of Nov. 2, according to the article, which was carried on IBJ.com.
The plant, located on Belmont Avenue, has about 300 employees and is operated by International Paper’s Shorewood Packaging division, which is headquartered in Stamford, Connecticut, and provides printing, packaging and retail display products, the Indiana Business Journal reported.
