U.K. newspaper group Trinity Mirror to close three free weekly newspapers in England's Midlands region, cut 66 jobs

LOS ANGELES , November 16, 2011 (Forestweb) – Trinity Mirror Plc, one of the largest U.K. newspaper publishing groups, said it will shut down three free weekly newspapers in the Midlands region of England, merge some resources and slash 66 jobs, including 45 editorial and 11 advertising positions, the British Broadcasting Corp. (BBC) reported Nov. 14.

The three titles that will close include Birmingham Mail, Birmingham Post and Coventry Telegraph, which is part of a number of changes aimed to keep its regional business sustainable.

Trinity Mirror plans to set up a regional production and features unit, reported the BBC.

In its most recent round of cost-trimming, Trinity Mirror let go more than 100 editorial employees, according to the National Union of Journalists' Chris Morley, the BBC reported.

The 6,500-employee company publishes five national newspapers, including the Daily Mirror, according to the company website.
