European MDF/HDF, OSB producers make significant production cuts, attribute downtime to maintenance, high inventories

A build up of inventory since April has prompted a high number of European wood based panels producers to reduce production, according to a report by German industry news service Euwid.
The curtailments follow a number of production adjustments at MDF/HDF plants last year, when companies permanently modified their output to reflect slower demand.
During May and June, a modest number of stoppages were announced, generally of up to one week in duration, in the particleboard and MDF/HDF sectors. An example is Pfleiderer's MDF/HDF facility in Baruth, Germany. Most of these curtailments were attributed to maintenance work or technical problems.
OSB sales were relatively strong in May, and mills began maintenance stoppages from June. A number of mills are still running, but have reduced production to work through a build-up of inventory.
