Creative Digital Printing expands its digital fleet to include the varioPRINT i-series with the goal of targeting the book publishing market

Many crucial elements contribute to managing a successful business. Some may assume that to run a business with continuous growth means simply investing in the latest innovative technology and finding the right talent to fit your goals and objectives. While those ring true, an important piece of the puzzle not often found is passion, and truly loving what you do.

Creative Digital Printing was founded in Las Vegas, Nevada by Jeff Casey in 2005 at a time when his brother, Chris Casey, was working in Cincinnati, Ohio as VP of Sales for a book printing company. Chris and Jeff always had a vision of being business partners, and in late 2019 decided to make it happen. Teaming up with Canon Solutions America in January of 2020 was a big step in the process. Expanding their commercial print business into the book market and delivering high quality output to their customer base meant utilizing their vast expertise and knowledge in book manufacturing to offer a refreshing and unique customer experience. The challenges this dynamic duo was able to overcome while building their book business only showcases the depth of their passion and dedication to their craft. Utilizing their newest varioPRINT i-series, the brothers’ business has flourished even during the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“My brother and I started this book business in 2020 after we realized we had something unique to offer among other print shops in the Las Vegas area. We have tremendous experience and knowledge, and we have passion. I absolutely love books. I eat, sleep, and breathe books. I know the small and dynamic intricacies that go into the process of book manufacturing, and I know the technology that can get the job done. That’s why we knew partnering with Canon Solutions America was the right choice,” said Chris Casey, VP of Sales at Creative Digital. “I went into this business with over 24 years of book manufacturing experience. With this experience, we’ve built trust with our customers, who know when we say we’re going to get a project done by a certain day, we get it done. That trust has gotten us a long way thus far.”

During the onset of the COVID pandemic, printers like Creative Digital were quick to realize that they could no longer depend upon their normal go-to commercial print operations. They were left searching for various alternative growth avenues to keep their businesses afloat, which meant change, and fast. Having just invested in the varioPRINT i-series, they were quick to test the limits of the press, exploring new applications and testing its capabilities.

“We were just starting out as an up-and-coming book manufacturing company, confident and excited to service our customers with high-quality books, and just like that, we had to fight to stay open as a result of the pandemic, stay working and stay relevant. We did what we had to do to survive,” said Chris Casey. “Our shop now looks totally different than it did when we first opened in 2005. People are starting to realize we are somebody to notice. The other sheetfed print shops were starting to realize our binding capabilities and started reaching out to take advantage of our services, which further established our presence and expertise in book manufacturing, especially considering we had the only digital inkjet press in the state of Nevada at the time. It has outperformed pretty much anything that I’d ever expected. I was amazed at just how flexible, and how much this press was able to do. Everything from variable NCR [no carbon required copy paper], menus, brochures, books, catalogs and magazines, this press can do it all.”

Quickly making its mark after the installation in March 2020, the Creative Digital team reached 20 million impressions by the following May. Five months later, hitting 40 million impressions, the team quickly realized the powerful potential this press had, and Creative Digital becoming a name to know in their area.

“The nice thing about our i300 is its ability to run gloss paper, and it can run cover stocks of up to 120 lb. silk cover,” said Chris Casey. “We used to print all of our covers on the toner press, and we were capable of taking in jobs that would have gone to a sheet-fed toner printer. In the past, with our toner printers, the turnaround for these types of jobs would be about a couple of days or more. Now, with our i300, we can take on more customers and more print jobs, and provide quicker turnaround and outstanding quality.”

In their search to find other areas of growth revenue with the varioPRINT i-series, Creative Digital started exploring the mailing and commercial printing business. The team learned very quickly about the amount of variable data they could put through the press and the benefits of doing so, including growth opportunities in new markets as well as the ability to streamline jobs to get work out the door and in customers’ hands quicker.

“Children’s books ended up really taking off around August of 2020, and we started printing 8.5 by 11 inches sized books ranging from 24 to 48 pages roughly with ink coverage up to about 70 percent, full color, at about 1,000 to 3,000 copies at a time. Throughout that summer, we were constantly learning about the press. We streamlined our operations and became very efficient in our book manufacturing process,” said Chris Casey. “We attended the thINK Ahead conference and gained quite a bit of knowledge that helped us in our overall operations.”

Creative Digital continues to be one of the only true book manufacturers in the greater Las Vegas area, working day in and day out to deliver the best possible output to their customers. Chris explains, “Our goal is to visit as many sheet-fed print service providers as possible to talk to them about being their go-to for their small-run books, anywhere from 100 to 2,000 pieces. We want to show them that while they may be able to handle some of those shorter-run jobs, seeing the unmatched quality of the prints coming off our i300 will encourage them to choose us.”

“One customer of ours, based in Chicago, told us that without our support, they would not have gotten their books done; they would have had to wait months to get their books manufactured. To hear a customer tell us we saved their business just added even more fuel to our fire. It’s why we do what we do.”

“We couldn’t be prouder of our customers’ strength and determination during such a turbulent yet transformative time for our industry. We applaud the team at Creative Digital for taking advantage of each and every possible growth avenue,” said Francis A. McMahon, executive vice president, Production Print Solutions, Canon Solutions America, Inc. “Through our powerful technology and expert sales and support staff, we look forward to leading our customers into the future, offering our support every single step of the way.”
