Barnes & Noble announces the poignant and heartfelt debut novel The Daughters of Madurai as their March National Book Club pick. The bookseller welcomes readers to join author Rajasree Variyar at a free live virtual event. The author will answer questions from the audience and participate in an engaging roundtable conversation with Shannon DeVito, Senior Director of Books at Barnes & Noble, and Miwa Messer, Executive Producer of Poured Over, the B&N Podcast. Attendees must register via Eventbrite to access the live stream on Zoom.

“Rajasree Variyar has gifted us with a vivid, universal story about the bond between mothers and daughters; The Daughters of Madurai is a gripping stunner of a novel,” said Shannon DeVito, Senior Director of Books, Barnes & Noble. “Variyar deftly moves along the alternating timelines of 1990s India and present-day Australia and artfully uses both backdrops to illustrate the long-lasting horrors of female infanticide. This novel is an absolute knockout.”

Mother Janani finds herself trapped in a rapidly modernizing society still quietly engaging in a vicious practice. The roots of the routine stretch back centuries, interwoven with the ongoing effects of colonialism, poverty, sexism and cultural expectations. Nearly thirty years later, her daughter Nila still feels the reverberations as she sets out to discover her family history and free herself from secrets long held.

The Barnes & Noble Book Club entices booklovers with a thoughtfully chosen newly published novel each month. The Barnes & Noble Exclusive Edition of The Daughters of Madurai features beautifully designed endpapers, colorful edges, an insightful reading group guide and an exclusive afterword. Leading up to the event, readers can share their thoughts and engage in conversation on social media using the hashtag #BNBookClub. During the livestream readers are encouraged to participate in the discussion and submit questions to be answered throughout.

“It is an absolute honor to be selected as a Barnes & Noble Book Club pick. This recognition for The Daughters of Madurai, my first novel, is something I couldn’t have imagined and is truly humbling — particularly given the exceptional reach, experience, and passion of Barnes & Noble booksellers. I hope readers thoroughly enjoy the novel — thank you once again for selecting The Daughters of Madurai!”

The enthusiasm and word-of-mouth recommendations of Barnes & Noble booksellers across the country have sparked ardent praise from readers nationwide, turning great novels into bestsellers. Previous Barnes & Noble Book Club selections have included: The Night Ship by Jess Kidd, The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead, The Testaments by Margaret Atwood, The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett, The Paper Palace by Miranda Cowley Heller, One Italian Summer by Rebecca Serle, Sea of Tranquility by Emily St. John Mandel, Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin and The Cloisters by Katy Hays.
