The key values that people look for in cosmetic skin products and sustainable packaging can be surprisingly similar: natural ingredients, purity and strength. So, when Yves Rocher began the search for a renewable solution that emphasized these characteristics, as well as versatility and performance, it is perhaps no surprise they came to Stora Enso. Yves Rocher's Elixir Botanique range uses natural marine ingredients to help fight the harmful effects that pollution can have on the skin, like age acceleration. This emphasis on natural sources reinforced the idea that the packaging for its Repairing Antipollution Day Care should support the company's commitment to sustainability. The company, part of Groupe Rocher, looks to use FSC-certified European wood fibers wherever possible. For its new product, the company wanted to reduce the amount of carton used by as much as 40% - no small feat when one considers the challenges this places on the new material. By removing two sides from the packaging, the need for a PP film was removed, and it also made the product more visible to would-be buyers. There was a further functional benefit of the packaging working as integrated tamper evidence. Much of Yves Rocher's commerce is carried out via their popular online store, meaning that the packaging would need to be able to withstand lengthy transportation. This involved gaining ISTA® 6-Series Amazon approval, which sets strict criteria to meet with regard to resistance to vibration, shocks, and the other stresses often experienced during parcel delivery. REDUCING MATERIAL USAGE "The solution that Yves Rocher decided on was extremely beneficial in terms of sustainability and visual appearance," says Frédéric Voltz, Converter Support Manager, Consumer Board Division at Stora Enso. "It placed a lot of demands on the packaging in terms of strength and resistance to tearing. As well as having to offer the same level of protection with less material, the necessary cuts place stress on the material. We had to select the material with the best possible grammage and excellent strength. That is how we decided on Performa Brilliance™." Performa Brilliance is a lightweight and low carbon packaging solution with the requisite brightness and smoothness to allow premium products like Elixir Botanique to shine. Its standards for visual impression, printability, and runnability are such that the Repairing Antipollution Day Care's packaging could feature artwork on the light-coated reverse side to help bring out the product's visual brand identity. Elixir Botanique hit stores in the Fall of 2021 and the response so far has been very positive from retailers and customers alike. "We have been very happy with how the Perfoma Brilliance has performed so far," says Guillaume Delaunay, Packaging Project Manager, Groupe Rocher Operations. "They were willing to do everything it takes to find the solution that worked best for the product and meet all our technical needs." PROVEN PERFORMANCE AS A SUSTAINABLE SOLUTION Having proven that Performa Brilliance continues to offer protection, tear resistance, and excellent visual qualities, it is well-placed to help more brand owners help reduce material usage. "This product shows that Performa Brilliance is able to withstand the pressure placed in this low-material solution," concludes Yousra Gherairi, Business Development Manager, Cosmetics & Luxury at Stora Enso. "It provides a great example of how the product can help companies get excellent results with lighter material usage - in cosmetics and beyond."
