Spunlace nonwovens --in the form of disinfecting wipes and medical garments-- played a critical role in containing the pandemic in 2020. But just how strong is the market today?
Quite strong, it turns out.
A recent report by Smithers finds that spunlace nonwovens consumption accounted for 1.8 million tonnes in 2023, valued at $10.3 billion.
Smithers links the global drive to reduce or eliminate plastics in wipes to a preference for spunlace fabrics, particularly as new, plastics free variants are developed.
The consulting firm says these facts are “certain” to keep spunlace as the major nonwoven product used in wipes through to 2028, with a projected growth rate of 8.65% in volume and 10.1% in value.
While demand for sustainable wipes continues to prop up the market for spunlace nonwovens, could calls for more eco-friendly fabrics see brand new markets for spunlace emerge in the next five years?
