The Save a Tonne Challenge calls on Ontario manufacturers to reduce packaging waste by one ton in one year

In response to the urgent need for sustainable practices and environmental responsibility, the Save a Tonne Challenge, powered by supply-chain-analytics platform provider The Owl Solutions, is calling on manufacturers to commit to reducing their waste by a minimum of one ton within one year. This challenge is in alignment with the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) initiative currently implemented across Canada and set to become mandatory in Ontario this May.

The key challenge of EPR is to significantly reduce waste of materials such as paper, plastic and metal. Nearly 2.8 million tons of plastic waste ends up in Canadian landfills every year – equivalent to the weight of 24 CN towers. With approximately one-third of landfill space occupied by packaging waste, there is a critical need for proactive measures to reduce waste production.

“As we launch the Save a Tonne Challenge, we’re calling on manufacturers to embrace a paradigm shift in their approach to waste management,” says Huge Fuentes Diaz, Co-Founder and CEO of The Owl Solutions. “By signing up for this challenge, businesses are not just committing to sustainability for their facilities; they are becoming catalysts for positive change in the industry.”

By engaging in the Save a Tonne Challenge, manufacturers stand to stay ahead by positioning themselves as industry leaders. It demonstrates adherence to environmental regulations, builds trust with consumers, and enhances brand reputation and credibility among environmentally conscious consumers. Participating in the Save a Tonne Challenge also helps to drive innovation in sustainable product management by leveraging a community of like-minded leaders collaborating on environmentally friendly solutions to drive positive changes.

How it works:

Manufacturers are invited to sign a commitment to reduce their waste by a minimum of one ton within one year. From there, participants will have their logo posted on the Save a Tonne website and be provided with a badge to display on their website and social-media channels. They will also receive exclusive discounts to Waste Wise, a platform offering personalized insights on waste-management capabilities. After one year, manufacturers who have completed the challenge will be asked to submit a report, receive a Save a Tonne badge and have a chance to win awards for their efforts in EPR.

ABOUT SAVE A TONNE

The Save a Tonne Challenge is an initiative powered by The Owl Solutions aimed at incentivizing manufacturers across Ontario to take responsibility for their packaging waste. This initiative was established to address the recorded nearly 6.2 million tons of plastic waste produced for Canadian consumption, of which 2.3 million tons were packaging waste in 2019. Through this endeavour, companies are encouraged to adopt sustainable practices and reduce their environmental footprint by minimizing packaging waste. Through a commitment to saving one ton of packaging waste in one year, The Save a Tonne Challenge is taking a critical step forward to addressing and improving Canada’s waste-management issue and promoting a healthier and more sustainable future.
