A spotlight has been shone on Graphic Packaging’s innovation in sustainable packaging following its Gold award in the confectionery category in the inaugural Environmental Packaging Awards. The scheme, organized by Packaging News recognizes the very best in sustainable packaging design across a number of categories. The winning Boardio™ design, created in partnership with multinational confectionery manufacturer Perfetti Van Melle, is a first-to-market paperboard bottle in the gum category that offers a more than 80% reduction in plastic use versus the previous rigid plastic tub, with no loss of structural integrity or barrier performance. The recyclable pack, with 90 percent fiber content, is compact and ergonomic, has rounded corners, and is designed to fit comfortably into the palm as well as into most cup holders and desk tidies for consumer convenience. The Boardio bottle went on sale initially in Walmart at 3,000 locations across the U.S. before being launched in Europe. A winning streak for Boardio This latest success continues the winning streak of the Boardio Mentos gum pack for Perfetti Van Melle after previous wins at the Dieline Awards, PAC Global Awards, PPC Awards, and WorldStar Awards.
