For the second time in a row, SÜDPACK has been voted into the top 50 of the most sustainable medium-sized companies in Germany in the cross-industry sustainability ranking of WirtschaftsWoche. After an excellent placement in 36th place in 2022, the film manufacturer was able to improve even further this year - and is now in 10th place. For this second study, the Munich consultancy Munich Strategy analyzed again in a very complex process on behalf of the renowned business magazine the activities of 4,000 companies in the three areas of environment, social affairs and governance (ESG criteria).

On June 23, WirtschaftsWoche reported in detail on the investigation in its 26/2023 issue under the title story "Fair and crisis-proof". The credo: "Those who invest in environmental friendliness and justice are better off - especially in economically uncertain times."

“We have been investing in a wide range of activities in the field of sustainability for many years. From production processes and products to construction projects, internal recycling streams and comprehensive investments in a functioning circular economy to society, employees and the environment," confirms Carolin Grimbacher, Managing Partner of the SÜDPACK Group, on request. "We are all the more pleased that our commitment is being noticed and that we are also listed among the 50 best - and now even in 10th place - in this second cross-industry study."

In order to be able to choose the pioneers in terms of sustainability in German medium-sized companies, Munich Strategy used an algorithm to evaluate the sustainability reports as well as the press and social media activities of 4,000 companies with a turnover of 10 million to approx. 1.5 billion euros. The experts then used the data to calculate the Sustainability Score, on the basis of which the 400 best companies were narrowed down and examined in detail in detailed interviews with various stakeholders. In addition to ecological aspects, social and governance issues were also included in the assessment.

At SÜDPACK …

All activities and goals in the areas of ecology, economy and social affairs are bundled in a comprehensive sustainability roadmap. The results, which are substantiated with reliable data and figures, are regularly published in the sustainability reports that are drawn up on a voluntary basis. “As the technology and innovation leader in our industry, we repeatedly set strong accents with our pioneering products. In addition, SÜDPACK is also one of the most important drivers with regard to a functioning circular economy in the plastics industry," emphasizes Carolin Grimbacher.

Even if sustainability at SÜDPACK is linked to significant investments and great effort: in the end, the environment, people, the industry and the company benefit equally. The unique portfolio of resource-saving and recyclable film solutions and packaging concepts as well as the outstanding expertise in the development of customer-specific solutions create competitive advantages. Sustainable corporate management strengthens the brand and reputation, as does the visible sense of responsibility for the climate, nature and society - and ultimately also helps in dealing with the current challenges, which include the shortage of skilled workers, energy management and the topic of the circular economy.

Anyone who invests in sustainability benefits

For a holistic view of its films and packaging concepts, SÜDPACK offers its customers a systematic analysis of the environmental impact and the energy balance of the products throughout their entire life cycle - from production to disposal - with the new LCA tool. Because: “The primary goal must be to reduce negative influences as much as possible and to consistently develop recyclable packaging for individual needs on the basis of valid data. This is the only way we can come a little closer to our goal of becoming a ZERO WASTE company,” affirms Carolin Grimbacher.

The LCA tool also supports the decision as to which end-of-life scenario is to be used in each case. As the only manufacturer of flexible films to date, SÜDPACK has direct access to chemical recycling capacities through the cooperation with Carboliq and can thus gain a valuable liquid resource from plastic fractions that have not been recyclable up to now, such as multi-layer films for food packaging. In addition, thanks to our own regranulation and compounding, customers also have the option of mechanical recycling.

The renewed award by WirtschaftsWoche based on a well-founded analysis inspires and is both a challenge and an incentive. “Being on the right track is not enough. We must also consistently take the next steps" is the maxim of the film manufacturer.
