According to Vale, steel producers from around the world, especially those in Europe and the Middle East, have expressed interest in its iron ore briquettes, a low-temperature agglomeration of high-quality iron ore held together by binding agents. Vale Inaugurates Iron Ore Briquetting Plant
12/12/2023 - Vale has cut the ribbon on its first-ever iron ore briquette plant, a milestone achievement that will help the company and its steelmaking customers lower their air emissions.
Announced by Vale in 2021, the product is said to emit less particulates and gases such as sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide when compared to typical agglomeration processes. It also does away with the use of water in its making, Vale said.
“We are offering a product that will support our customers, the steel manufacturers, in adapting to the emissions-reduction targets being adopted by governments around the world, contributing to the fight against climate change,” said Vale president Eduardo Bartolomeo. “In addition, we are inducing Brazil’s neo-industrialization, which will be based on low-carbon industry, and once again fulfilling Vale's vocation as an anchor of regional development.”
More than 30 companies have already shown interest in receiving shipments of briquette in 2024, Vale said.
A second plant in Tubarão is scheduled to open at the beginning of next year. Together, the two plants will have the capacity to produce 6 million tons annually, Vale said.
