Transborder freight between US and Canada, Mexico rises 26% year-over-year in April as truck freight is up 16.5% and rail freight up 22.6%; over 99% of pipeline freight between US, Canada and over 50% of ocean freight between US, Mexico are mineral fuels

Transborder freight between the U.S. and North American countries (Canada and Mexico) in April 2022:

• Total transborder freight: $135.3 billion of transborder freight moved by all modes of transportation, up 26.0% compared to April 2021. 
• Freight between the U.S. and Canada totaled $69.1B. Freight between the U.S. and Mexico totaled $66.2B.
• Trucks moved $79.6 billion of freight, up 16.5% compared to April 2021.
• Railways moved $19.3 billion of freight, up 22.6% compared to April 2021.

Total Transborder Freight by Border Compared to April 2021:

• U.S.-Canada up 31.2%
• U.S.-Mexico up 20.9%

Total Transborder Freight by Border and Mode:

The value of oil increased by 64.9% in April 2022 compared to April 2021.1  Over 99% of pipeline freight between the U.S. and Canada are mineral fuels, primarily oil and gas. Of freight by vessel between the U.S. and Mexico, over 50% are mineral fuel shipments between Gulf of Mexico ports in the U.S. and Mexico.

Truck Freight: $79.6 billion (58.9% of all transborder freight)

• U.S.-Canada:    $35.6 billion
• U.S.-Mexico:     $44.0 billion

Rail Freight: $19.3 billion (14.3% of all transborder freight)

• U.S.-Canada:    $11.4 billion 
• U.S.-Mexico:       $7.9 billion

  • Port Huron, MI          $2.8 billion
  • Detroit, MI                 $2.2 billion

• Top three rail commodities
  • Vehicles and parts        $7.3 billion
