November 24, 2023 (press release) –

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – November 24, 2023 - CSX teams have begun removing the 16 railcars from the site of the derailment that occurred on Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 22, just north of Livingston, Kentucky.

With the fire extinguished, teams were able to verify that two molten sulphur cars were breached and lost a portion of their contents. No other hazardous materials were released. Containment measures have been deployed to mitigate any impact to the environment as crews work to remove the damaged cars and remediate the area. Continuous monitoring of both the air and surface water quality will be performed until crews complete the removal of all rail cars and materials from the derailment site.

Safety is the top priority for CSX as we continue to work closely with Rockcastle County emergency responders and the EPA to completely restore the area. CSX is committed to recovering all product released and mitigating environmental impacts before rebuilding our track.

The cause of the incident is under investigation.

CSX thanks the Rockcastle County authorities for their support and close collaboration throughout the response to this incident. We are also thankful for the community members who worked with us to help residents who were affected, especially those who assisted us in serving Thanksgiving dinners for the community yesterday. CSX apologizes for the inconvenience this incident has caused the local community and is appreciative of everyone’s patience as we work to restore the area.

CSX is still supplying food, lodging and other necessities to affected community members. Concerned residents can call CSX for information at 1-800-805-9840.

We will also continue coordinate with emergency personnel and local authorities to ensure that those living and working in the Livingston community will receive the most up-to-date information possible. Updates for the community are posted on www.csx.com/response.
