Australian plain packaging experts planning to advocate for New Zealand to adopt plain tobacco packaging legislation similar to that of Australia, are being hosted by Cancer Society of New Zealand

Cancer Society of New Zealand , May 13, 2014 (press release) – The Cancer Society is delighted to be hosting Australian plain packaging experts, Jonathan Liberman and Kylie Lindorff, while they are in New Zealand to give oral submissions on the Smokefree Environments (Tobacco Plain packaging) Amendments Act. They will present to the Health Select Committee on Wednesday 14 May. The Wellington hearing is the last in a series of three presentations.

Both the Society’s guests will table the latest evidence from Australia before the Committee, and will advocate for New Zealand to adopt similar plain packaging legislation without delay.
The Society’s National Tobacco Control Advisor, Skye Kimura-Paul says, “we are extremely honoured to have our Australian colleagues here in New Zealand supporting this very important issue”.

We have listened to all the submissions given to date, and it is clear that since Australia switched to plain packs there is evidence which will be important for the Select Committee to consider”.

Jonathan Liberman is an international advisor to Australia’s legal defence for its tobacco plain packaging law, in arbitrations at the World Trade Organisation; he is the Director of McCabe Centre for Law and Cancer, and for the Union for International Cancer Control. Kylie Lindorff is the Manager of Tobacco Control Policy for Quit Victoria in Australia.
