UPM North America to raise domestic prices of all supercalendered and coated groundwood paper web grades by US$30/ton on Jan. 1

LOS ANGELES , September 16, 2011 () – UPM North America today told domestic customers it will increase the transaction prices for all of its supercalendered and coated groundwood web paper grades by US$30/ton, effective with orders invoiced on or after Jan. 1.

The increase applies to all basis weights on the affected grades, manufactured for both rotogravure and heatset printing applications.

The supercalendered grades include UPM brands Max SCA, Cat SCA+, Smart SCA++, and Cote.

The coated groundwood web grades include the UPM brands Cote, Satin, Ultra, and Star.

Several major North American uncoated mechanical papers producers have announced Oct. 1 $30/ton hikes; among the announcers were Catalyst Paper Corp., AbitibiBowater Inc., Irving Paper Ltd., and Verso Corp.

UPM North America’s coated groundwood paper capacity is approximately 380,000 tons per year and it imports more than 700,000 tons/year, according to the company website. The operations are in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, including the Blandin Paper Mill and the forestry and wood sourcing facilities.
