Nova Scotia Power, NewPage say steam turbine generator for 60-MW, C$208M biomass cogeneration plant at Point Tupper, Nova Scotia, paper mill now being made by Mitsubishi, due to be delivered by Q2 2012; construction started on unit's housing

LOS ANGELES , July 25, 2011 (Industry Intelligence) – Mitsubishi Power Systems Americas Inc. has started making the steam turbine generator for NewPage Corp.’s 60-megawatt biomass cogeneration plant, said a NewPage spokesperson on Thursday, reported The Cape Breton Post on July 21.

Although Mitsubishi’s Tokyo factory, which is making the unit, still has force majeure in place following Japan’s March 11 earthquake, it is due to deliver the steam turbine generator by second-quarter 2012, as anticipated, said Patricia Dietz.

Dietz, who provided an update on the C$208-million project, said that Mitsubishi provided photos this week that show the turbine being built. She said the news came as “a relief,” the Post reported.

Construction has started on the building which will house the turbine and is located at NewPage’s Port Hawkesbury paper mill in Point Tupper, Nova Scotia. The building is expected to be weather-tight by the end of this year.

Commissioning and startup of the operation is expected by year-end 2012. NewPage is responsible for the plant’s construction and will operate it and supply the woody biomass feedstock, reported the Post.

NewPage, which now clear cuts about 60%-70% of its harvest, intends to reduce that to 50%.

Nova Scotia Power Co. is investing C$200 million in the project and own the facility, the Post reported.
