LOS ANGELES , September 2, 2022 () –

North Carolina State University is providing additional funding for nanogel research to accelerate chronic wound healing, the school announced on Sept. 1.

The research project is led by biomedical engineering associate professor Ashley Brown. The nanogels are derived from neonatal fibrin found in pig cells. The fibrin is almost molecularly identical to the fibrin in human cells, which the body uses to repair wounds.

According to the announcement, chronic wounds affect “millions of Americans each year.” These wounds can take months to heal, which increases the probability of complications such as life-threatening infections.

Veterinarians could also use the nanogel to treat chronic wounds on pets or farm animals.

The university’s Chancellor’s Innovation Fund will provide additional support for the project to begin clinical trials on rodents.
