The SMA Board of Directors voted last month to add the Steel Manufacturers Association to the list of organizations endorsing the Steel Standards Principles developed by the World Trade Organization.
The standards were announced on December 1 during the Business and Philanthropy Climate Forum roundtable on the first day of the COP28 UN Climate Change Conference in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
The principles are designed to create a framework for determining how greenhouse gas emissions are measured in the steel sector. Scores of NGOs, standard-setting organizations and industry groups from around the world have developed decarbonization schemes for steel production.
The Global Steel Climate Council, of which the SMA is a founding member, also endorsed the Steel Standards Principles. Earlier this year GSCC published the Steel Climate Standard, which helps consumers identify the cleanest steel available regardless of steelmaking route.
