Writing in Steel Market Update, SMA President Philip K. Bell applauded the Biden administration’s Buy Clean initiatives and urged the federal government to buy steel made with the lowest carbon emissions.
Doing so, he said, requires adopting a single standard for measuring carbon emissions in steelmaking that makes no accommodations for older, high-emitting steelmaking technology.
“In our opinion, the policy should be about one thing: getting the cleanest steel available,” he wrote. “This is done by adopting a single standard for steel regardless of how it is made. There is also growing support for this concept.”
