The European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) is a new regulation focused on deforestation free supply chains. The Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) has been proactive in analyzing how the SFI Standards can provide value in demonstrating compliance with EUDR. SFI agrees with the EUDR’s goal of avoiding global deforestation and degradation. SFI-certified forest products from Canada and the United States remain an important supply to Europe and we are highly motivated to demonstrate the relevance of sustainability tools, like SFI certification, and to provide guidance as the EUDR is implemented. However, the EUDR presents several challenges, including achieving a clear and common understanding of forest degradation and addressing considerable data requirements related to geolocation. It is critical that we work together to ensure the sustainability of our planet through solutions that not only avoid negative impacts but also deliver positive contributions to the long-term health of people and the planet. SFI is working with our network across the forest and conservation sector to address important sustainability issues in a way that is implementable, practical, and appropriate for the North American context. We will continue to work to meet the expectations of global regulators and customers while achieving sustainable forest management that builds resilient forests and supports sustainable communities.
