JD Irving co-CEO applauds Canadian government decision to include forest biomass as eligible source for clean energy tax credits; move creates 'clear incentive' to accelerate biomass use for power, heat, will help achieve Canada's goal of net zero by 2050

J.D. Irving, Limited applauds federal move on biomass

Saint John, New Brunswick – J.D. Irving, Limited co-CEO Jim Irving released the following statement in response to the Government of Canada’s decision to include forest biomass as an eligible source of clean energy for both the Clean Technology and Clean Electricity Investment Tax Credits:

“By including biomass as an eligible source of clean energy, the Government of Canada has created a clear incentive to accelerate its use to power and heat homes and businesses, which is a significant step forward in achieving Canada’s goal of Net Zero by 2050. 

“Also, this policy change aligns with the clean energy policy in the United States, thereby attracting and protecting investments in Canada and preventing investments being transferred south of the border.

“We commend the federal government for their foresight in implementing this new policy.”

Forest biomass includes wood waste, wood chips, sawdust, bark and other energy by-products from the pulp making process. Forest biomass can be used for heating and electricity purposes, displacing fossil fuels. Biomass is a renewable and sustainable resource and as such can play a significant role in reducing carbon emissions across the country.
