The association DIE PAPIERINDUSTRIE e. V. and the Association of the Corrugated Cardboard Industry e. V. welcome the decision of the EU Parliament (EP) on the Packaging Regulation (PPWR). Parliament recognized that the established system of recycling paper, cardboard and cardboard offers ecological advantages and should be viewed as equivalent to reusable packaging. In the opinion of the two associations, it is now important that the Council of Ministers takes this groundbreaking decision by the European representatives into account when making its decision. With the PPWR, the EU wants, among other things, to reduce packaging volumes in Europe and strengthen the circular economy. The EU Commission's first proposal envisaged introducing priority for reusable packaging through rigid quota regulations. The EU Parliament has now taken a different path and advocated protecting existing, well-functioning circulation systems. With this approach, according to the paper and corrugated cardboard industry, the potential of fiber-based packaging can also be exploited in the future in the spirit of the circular economy. Back
