Waste Connections, the operator of the 639-acre Chiquita Canyon Landfill in California, has been ordered by US Environmental Protection Agency to protect human health and environment against harmful odors and hazardous liquid waste emanating from a smouldering fire within the landfill, reports Waste Today Magazine. Rising pressure has resulted in spillages of benzene-contaminated water, categorized as hazardous waste. Steps to address EPA's directive have begun, states Waste Connections. Landfill closure is not considered an effective solution, according to County Supervisor Kathryn Barger, while the Department of Toxic Substances Control has identified violations, including a potential benzene release above hazardous thresholds.
