WHITEHORSE, Yukon , September 7, 2023 (press release) –

The Government of Yukon and the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency combined financial contributions to launch a new support program offering funding for commercial harvesters and retailers.

Commercial harvesters and retailers can now apply for reimbursements of up to $15,000 for purchases, repairs and upgrades to harvest equipment, vehicles, trailers, personal protective equipment and other equipment. For larger harvesting businesses, the funds can be used for things like planning and administrative costs.

This program will help commercial timber harvesters and retailers reduce barriers in getting more firewood to market.

Commercial timber harvesters and retailers that harvest, process or sell timber and firewood can apply for this program. Applicants have until March 31, 2024, to apply or until the $200,000 in total available funds is exhausted.

This program is in addition to the Timber Harvesting Incentive, which is accepting applications until March 31, 2024. Together, these programs will provide short-term relief as the Government of Yukon continues to work with the forest industry, First Nations and the Yukon Wood Products Association to ensure a stable and consistent long-term wood supply.

The availability of firewood is important to Yukoners, especially with winter approaching. The new Forestry Support Program, fueled by combined efforts with the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency, supports growth and innovation in our wood industry. Investing in our local harvesters and retailers is an investment in the heart of our economy. We encourage all eligible commercial harvesters and retailers to apply.

Minister of Energy Mines and Resources John Streicker

Small and medium sized businesses are the backbone of any thriving economy. This investment by the federal government, provided through CanNor, gives these businesses in the Yukon’s forestry sector more access to supports to help them grow and improve productivity. Investments like these help promote sustainable harvesting activities, and to develop a sector that will play a key role in carbon reduction targets in the territory and create jobs.

Minister of Northern Affairs PrairiesCan and CanNor the Honourable Dan Vandal
