July 12, 2023 (press release) –

As valuable time ticks away, the country’s largest industry groups are calling on Congress not to short-change national security. Unless Congress acts, the Chemical Facility Anti-Terrorism Standards (CFATS) are set to expire in just a few weeks on July 27th.

To help move legislation forward the coalition sent a letter to the House urging them to save CFATS by approving a clean long-term extension for the program. Doing so will keep important protections in place across the country and will support continued investments into enhancing security.

CFATS has a solid 15-year regulatory history, and the program has delivered real results. According to the Department of Homeland Security the agency has seen facilities increase their security measures by almost 60% under CFATS.

It’s success and smart regulatory approach is a big reason why ACC’s President and Chief Executive Officer, Chris Jahn said “CFATS has helped industry and the federal government enhance security for chemical facilities, workers and communities and has proven to be a practical and effective regulatory program.”

Congress has provided a long-term extension for CFATS four times with strong bipartisan support and this time should be no different. Delaying a long-term solution for CFATS until another day puts the country’s security at risk.
