Western U.S. sawmills in July produced 1.105 billion board ft. (bbf) of softwood lumber, down 5.1% from July 2021, when output was 1.164 bbf, and down 12.6% compared with June’s 1.264 bbf, according to the latest figures from the Western Wood Products Assn. (WWPA) of Portland, Oregon. Coastal mills contributed 696 million board ft. (mmbf) to the July total, down 6.0% from July 2021’s 741 mmbf and down 13.1% from June’s 801 mmbf, while Inland mills accounted for 354 mmbf in July, down 4.2% from July 2021’s 369 mmbf and down 13.2% from June’s 408 mmbf. California coast production in July was up 0.5% year-over-year and down 1.6% month-over-month to 54 mmbf. For the first seven months of 2022, Western U.S. sawmills produced 8.430 bbf of lumber, down 4.9% year-over year. Coastal mill output was 5.365 bbf, down 2.8%; Inland output was 2.710 bbf, down 7.2% and California coast production was 355 mmbf, down 15.3% year-over-year. Western U.S softwood lumber inventories in July, at 1.296 bbf, were up 1.2% compared with 1.281 bbf in July 2021. Western lumber mills in July produced at 79% of practical capacity, unchanged from July 2021 and down from 82% in June. For the first seven months of 2022, Western sawmills produced at 82% of practical capacity, down from 85% a year earlier.
