Western U.S. sawmills in April produced 1.182 billion board ft. (bbf) of softwood lumber, down 10.7% from April 2021, when output was 1.324 bbf, and down 13.1% compared with March’s 1.361 bbf, according to the latest figures from the Western Wood Products Assn. (WWPA) of Portland, Oregon. Coastal mills contributed 743 million board ft. (mmbf) to the April total, down 9.3% from April 2021’s 819 mmbf and down 14.3% from March’s 867 mmbf, while Inland mills accounted for 383 mmbf in April, down 11.7% from April 2021’s 434 mmbf and down 12.9% from March’s 440 mmbf. California coast production in April was down 21.9% year-over-year and up 4.6% month-over-month to 56 mmbf. For the first four months of 2022, Western U.S. sawmills produced 4.818 bbf of lumber, down 5.8% year-over year. Coastal mill output was 3.060 bbf, down 2.2%; Inland output was 1.551 bbf, down 9.7% and California coast production was 206 mmbf, down 23.5% year-over-year. Western U.S softwood lumber inventories in April, at 1.307 bbf, were up 7.3% compared with 1.218 bbf in April 2021. Western lumber mills in April produced at 80% of practical capacity, down from 85% in April 2021 and down from 84% in March. For the first four months of 2022, Western sawmills produced at 80% of practical capacity, down from 85% a year earlier.
