Western US sawmills in April produced 1.074 bbf of softwood lumber, down 10.0% year-over-year and 11.2% when compared with prior month: WWPA

LOS ANGELES , June 5, 2023 () –

Western U.S. sawmills in April produced 1.074 billion board ft. (bbf) of softwood lumber, down 10.0% from April 2022, when output was 1.193 bbf, and down 11.2% compared with March’s 1.209 bbf, according to the latest figures from the Western Wood Products Assn. (WWPA) of Portland, Oregon.

Coastal mills contributed 702 mmbf to the April total, down 6.9% from April 2022’s 754 million board ft. (mmbf), and down 9.4% from March’s 774 mmbf, while Inland mills accounted for 325 mmbf in April, down 16.0% from April 2022’s 387 mmbf and 13.9% lower than March’s 377 mmbf. 

California coast production in April decreased 9.4% year-over-year and fell 17.9% month-over-month to 47 mmbf. 

Western U.S softwood lumber inventories in April, at 1.321 bbf, were up 3.6% year-over-year.

Western lumber mills in April produced at 77% of practical capacity, declining from 81% in April 2022 but up from 75% in March.
