Registration is open for Winlock field day set for Aug. 13, Vashon event on Aug. 27. Western Washington landowners will have two chances next month to get out in the woods and learn about a wide variety of topics related to forest stewardship, including forest health, chainsaw safety and maintenance, forestland taxes, wildlife habitat, non-timber forest products, thinning and pruning, and wildfire resilience.
Washington State University Extension Forestry’s Family Forest Field Day for Southwest Washington, The Steve Stinson Legacy Family Forest Field Day, is scheduled for Aug. 13 in Winlock.
The event gives forest landowners -- whether they own a few acres or a few hundred -- an opportunity to meet consulting foresters, sign up for a site visit to their property, and spend the day outside learning about managing their private forestland.
This field day is sponsored by the Washington State University Extension, the Washington Department of Natural Resources, and a number of other organizations, including the Family Forest Foundation, Lewis County, Pacific County and the U.S. Forest Service.
The field day includes four one-hour sessions with a break for lunch at noon. Gates will open at 8:30 a.m. at the property, the Heitzmann/Laulainen Tree Farm, at 1309 King Rd. in Winlock. Participants should bring lunch.
Pre-registration is available through 5 p.m. on Aug. 10. The cost is $30 per person or $40 for a family of two or more. Register before 5 p.m. on Aug. 5 for a $10 discount.
Another western Washington field day has been scheduled for later this August. The Vashon Forest Owners Field Day is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 27 at the Island Center Forest, 188th Trailhead at 10612 SW 188th Street, Vashon.
Field day events will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., followed by a bring-your-own-picnic dinner and a King Conservation District Twilight Forest Tour. Pre-registration is encouraged by 5 p.m. on Aug. 24 for a cost of $20 per-person or $30 for a family. Same-day registration costs $30 per person or $40 for a family of two or more.
This field day is sponsored by the Washington State University Extension, the Washington Department of Natural Resources, King Conservation District and Island Center Forest.
