The Open Space Institute today applauded the New York State Assembly’s approval of critical legislation aimed at establishing a long-term blueprint for land protection in New York State. Sponsored by Assemblywoman Patricia Fahy (D-Albany), the so-called “30x30” bill calls for New York State to set a strategic goal to conserve 30 percent of the state’s land by the year 2030. “This important legislation acknowledges that strategic land conservation is a critical tool and a natural solution to protect vital water sources, provide critical recreational opportunities, save habitat for wildlife, and fight climate change, while combating its negative effects,” said Kim Elliman, President and CEO of the Open Space Institute. “With the nation losing a football field of land to development every 30 seconds, this measure is especially urgent.” Under the bill (A.5390b), New York State agencies would be required to identify land available for conservation, prioritizing land to promote biodiversity, preserve open space, and protect green space in urban areas. The measure also ensures that the conservation plan consider the needs of environmental justice communities. Having passed the Assembly, the bill goes to the State Senate for consideration. “This is an extraordinarily significant step forward for conservation in New York State,” said Elliman. ‘We commend Assemblywoman Fahy for her tremendous leadership in steering this measure through the New York State Assembly and hope that the Senate follows suit and passes the companion bill sponsored by Senator Todd Kaminsky.”
