The document brings data showing the evolution in the company’s forestry management and its environmental education actions. Klabin’s forest base spanned 141,000 hectares, distributed among 44 municipalities in the West, Midwest, Serra Catarinense, North and Alto Vale regions of Santa Catarina, as well as in the Northeast, Central Northeast and East regions of Rio Grande do Sul. The Company also has forests in the states of Paraná and São Paulo, information about which is available in separate documents.

According to Julio Nogueira, Sustainability and Environment manager at Klabin, the company is a global pioneer in adopting mosaic forest management, with pine and eucalyptus plantations interspersed with native forest areas, thus preserving local biodiversity. “As regards forests in Santa Catarina, the Company’s native areas represent 49% of the forest base - a significant volume that reflects our commitment to environmentally responsible operations. Moreover, planted and native forests contribute tremendously to preserving the environment, both in terms of protecting biodiversity and maintaining watersheds”, he said.

Thanks to its successful initiatives, Klabin is one of the companies with the most productive forests in the world, underlining its belief that appropriate management of the landscape results in excellent use of the production potential of forests while protecting natural resources. It also worth highlighting that the company has forests certified by the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) since 2004, which guarantees that its cultivation practices follow the best social, environmental and economic practices.

From the environmental conservation perspective, Klabin’s forests are part of the Atlantic Forest, one of Brazil’s most important biomes. The Company’s surveys in its farms identified more than 880 species of native flora, of which 90 species are endangered species (Critically Endangered (CR), Endangered (EN) and Vulnerable (VU)), and 534 species of wildlife, including amphibians, birds, mammals, fish, invertebrates and reptiles, of which 421 have recognized conservation status.

Forming future generations

In addition to the conservation efforts, Klabin believes that environmental awareness is a fundamental component of biodiversity conservation and the sustainable development of communities, and hence invests in environmental education programs, which are implemented in partnership with education departments and institutions. The goal is to help form children and youth who environmentally responsible and, above all, capable of multiplying knowledge.

Notable among the Company’s initiatives in Santa Catarina is the Caiubi Program, which disseminates the concepts of ecological awareness among teachers and students of schools in the Planalto Serrano region. During its history of more than 35 editions, the Program has benefitted 679 schools, 1,710 teachers and over 231,000 students throughout the state.

Klabin also runs other programs such as Social Forests, Legal Forests, Klabin Sowing Education, Crescer Program, Forest Development Program, Araucária Trail, Forestry Certification Program for Wood Suppliers, besides providing support to the public administration by municipal governments of the cities where it operates.
