Cleveland, OH, May 15, 2023 — US table egg production by volume is forecast to see annual increases of 2.0% through 2027, according to Eggs: United States, a report recently released by Freedonia Focus Reports. Volume production gains are expected to follow demand growth due to population growth. Production is projected to recover in 2023 from the avian flu disaster in 2022 and continue to grow through 2027. US table egg production by value is projected to decline 8.3% per year through 2027. Production by value is expected to drop in 2023 from the 2022 decade peak and decline through 2027, as prices return to trend from shortage-induced highs. However, egg production will be restrained by competition from processed eggs and plant-based egg substitutes. Egg production will also be limited by potential strains of avian influenza negatively impacting the egg-laying chicken population. The US government and other countries are testing and considering the use of vaccines for highly pathogenic avian influenza. Egg retail sales in the US by volume are expected to increase 1.9% annually through 2027. In value terms, egg retail sales are projected to increase slightly through 2027. Retail prices of eggs are forecast to continue rising in 2023. However, as egg shortages due to the avian influenza subside, prices are expected to decline through 2027. Prices will also be impacted by increases in the sale of costlier organic eggs and eggs from layers raised under cage-free and free-range conditions on smaller farms. These and other key insights are featured in Eggs: United States. This report forecasts to calendar years 2023 and 2027 US table egg production in dozens and nominal US dollars in terms of farm price received. US shell egg retail sales in dozens are also projected to 2023 and 2027. To illustrate historical trends, total table egg production by units and value, and total retail sales by units are provided in annual series from 2012 to 2022. For the purposes of this report, table eggs are unfertilized, whole in-shell eggs intended for consumption and stand in contrast to fertilized hatching eggs. Table eggs may be processed at breaker plants to yield egg products, such as whites, yolks, and various blends. Retail sales encompass uncooked eggs sold in their shells.
