January 13, 2022 (press release) –

Today, the Honourable Helena Jaczek, Minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario), announced a total investment of $8.5 million to four innovative businesses. This consists of support for the following projects:

  • Equispheres Inc., specializes in high-performance metal powders for additive manufacturing (3D printing) with a focus on developing innovative, clean-tech solutions. This $3.5-million-repayable contribution will help position the company to become a leading supplier in the industry by accelerating the commercialization of its proprietary metal powders and technologies. The company also expects to launch new atomization reactors to produce more metal powders annually to support the manufacturing of high-precision, stronger and lighter parts for use in sectors such as automotive, aerospace and semi-conductors. Integrating Equispheres’ metal powders for additive manufacturing are 30 percent lighter than traditional parts, resulting in improved fuel efficiency in vehicles and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Through this investment, the company expects to create 55 skilled jobs across the Ottawa Region.

"Equispheres aims to enable industrial 3D printing to compete with traditional manufacturing. Our metal powder technology dramatically increases the production speed of metal 3D printing while enabling lighter, stronger 3D printed parts. This contribution will allow us to scale up our production and position ourselves as the global leader in the exponentially growing 3D printing space.”
    - Kevin Nicholds, CEO, Equispheres Inc.

  • The Crump Group Inc., is one of Canada's leading, woman-led, all-natural pet food manufacturers for specialty pet, grocery and mass channels throughout North America. This $2.8-million repayable contribution, towards total project costs of $20 million, will help the company adopt first-in-Ontario manufacturing technologies to enhance productivity, expand into new markets and consolidate its existing facilities in Brampton into one Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) certified 130,000-sq. ft. space. Through this investment, the company expects to create 29 skilled jobs across the Brampton and Peel Region and create opportunities for local agri-food suppliers. This investment is expected to help the company more than double its revenue by 2023.

“With the rise in pet ownership, there has been an increased demand placed on pet food manufacturers when it comes to providing convenient, innovative pet foods in a variety of new formats with a high nutritional standard. Investing in pet food processing technology and plant expansion are critical if we are to successfully meet global consumer demand and grow our market share within the pet industry. We appreciate that FedDev Ontario has helped make this possible."
    - Margot Crump, CEO, The Crump Group Inc.

  • Fourmark Manufacturing, one of North America’s premier custom molding suppliers, produce recyclable packaging for the food, health and beauty sector. This $1.4-million-repayable contribution, towards total project costs of $4.1 million, will enable Fourmark to adopt new equipment to scale-up and increase production capacity by 75 percent to meet the growing demand for its sustainable packaging solutions. It will also support the transition to a greener economy by encouraging consumer brands to use more environmentally conscious containers. Through this investment, 12 skilled jobs will be created, and 67 jobs will be maintained across the Oakville and Halton Region, with $2.7 million in total private investment leveraged. The project would also help eliminate approximately 970,000 lbs of non-recyclable waste material from landfills annually.

“The funding came in the middle of a worldwide pandemic where timing was crucial. This funding to Fourmark is supporting a rapid growth in sales spurred on by the pandemic and is helping Fourmark continue down the path of environmentally conscious manufacturing and green solutions to food packaging challenges.”
    - Adam Cruickshank, CEO, Fourmark Manufacturing Inc.

  • BIG-nano Corporation (BIG-nano), a leading producer of first-in-world patented ultra-breathable nanofiber fabrics, which is being used in the manufacturing of filters and surgical face masks, supporting Canada’s PPE supply chain. This $750,000-repayable contribution, towards total project costs of $3.4 million, will help the company commercialize its manufacturing processes and outfit its new 13,000-square foot Cambridge facility with state-of-the-art equipment to produce up to 750 tonnes of nanofiber material per year. Through this investment, the company expects to create 16 skilled jobs, maintain an additional 10 jobs in the Cambridge and Waterloo Region and leverage over $1.7 million in total private investment.

“We at BIG-nano are happy to be doing our part to protect the Canadian public during the pandemic. We use nanotechnology developed right here in southern Ontario to make the best masks in the world that offer the highest comfort levels and breathability in the industry, without compromising on protection. We are very grateful for this funding from the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario that will help us to maximise our plant capacity whilst creating new high paying skill jobs.”
    - John Rawlins, President, BIG-nano Corporation

The Government of Canada is committed to providing businesses within southern Ontario’s manufacturing industry with the tools they need to scale-up, create good jobs and seize new opportunities to thrive well into the future.
