Intermarché demonstrates a relentless commitment to sustainability Intermarché, one of the best-known retail chains in France, demonstrates its ongoing commitment to sustainability and is now the first company in France to bring the SIG SwiftCap Linked closure with "Tethered Cap" to SIG carton packs. This crucial change affects the entire private label juice portfolio with around 20 SKUs. The fruit juice of Intermarché's own brand Paquito is produced by Agromousquetaires, the agro-industrial unit of the Les Mousquetaires group. Intermarché will also switch to a packaging material from the SIG Terra portfolio, which will help reduce the use of fossil plastics. The SIG Terra portfolio consists of a number of particularly more sustainable composite options: without an aluminum layer, with renewable, forest-based materials and/or recycled materials. SIG Terra packaging materials support the transition to renewable, forest-based polymers via a mass balance system. SIG uses tall oil as the raw material for the polymers. This is a forest-based by-product of the paper industry. This avoids the use of agricultural products that could otherwise be used for food production. The polymers are certified according to the ISCC PLUS certification system. The wafer-thin aluminum foil used in the packaging material protects the contents from light and oxygen and is certified according to the ASI standard (Aluminum Stewardship Initiative). Intermarché has achieved a first in the French juice market in partnership with SIG to combat plastic waste entering the environment. The move to tethered caps comes well before the EU Single-Use Plastics Directive comes into effect, which will require caps on single-use beverage packaging to remain firmly attached to the packaging from July 2024. The caps can be easily discarded and recycled along with the rest of the carton pack. This move is welcomed by both consumers and regulators. SIG's tethered caps make no compromises when it comes to consumer manageability. They allow for easy pouring and drinking from the pack. They are also compatible with existing SIG filling machines and cap applicators. This means that no major investments are required. Another example of the flexibility and adaptability of SIG's packaging and filling systems, giving customers the confidence that SIG's solutions are a safe investment for the future. The decision to use Paquito and MERCI! to market with the two innovations from SIG fits perfectly with the company's core focus on responsible action. Intermarché's socially responsible brand, Les Éleveurs vous disent MERCI! (The farmers say thank you!) is all about giving something back. The products offer consumers the opportunity to support better pay for farmers. THANK YOU! is also vehemently committed to the environment, society and animal welfare. MERCI! juices will be available in SIG PremiumBloc 1,000ml carton packs, Paquito in 750ml and 1,000ml packs. Arnaud Allain, Adhérent-Strategy and Development Director Agromouquetaires in Montgiscard: “As part of our targeted strategy for sustainable development, replacing fossil-based plastics with renewable materials is a priority. We have set ourselves ambitious CSR goals that we absolutely want to achieve. By being the first company in France to market SIG's tethered caps and by switching to a SIG Terra packaging material, we are helping to reduce the consumption of fossil resources and reduce the impact on the environment.” Mélanie Révolte, Marketing Manager France and BeNelux at SIG: “By choosing our tethered caps and packaging material from the SIG Terra portfolio, Intermarché is once again demonstrating its commitment to sustainability. We help Intermarché meet regulatory requirements and growing consumer demand for sustainable packaging. Consumers who choose the Paquito and MERCI! Decision-makers can also help act responsibly by supporting local farmers.” SIG's tethered caps and SIG Terra portfolio support SIG's roadmap to become a net-positive company that does more for society and people Environment does than it claims.
