Innovation is the engine driving us toward our goal of establishing a more circular economy. Research and development play a crucial role in conceptualizing, creating and manifesting the next generation of more sustainable packaging. Being responsible for R&D, product development and project management excellence means overseeing the development of these new products and working with Amcor’s customers to develop differentiating rigid packaging solutions that fit their needs.

Amcor has developed a rigorous R&D process that all current and future projects must go through. This innovation process is essential. We know consumers desire more sustainable packaging for the products they use every day. Currently, Amcor invests more than $100 million annually and has created a global network of innovation centers. Through these investments and partnering with our customers, Amcor is able to conceive and manufacture lightweight products that use less plastic material, while using more post-consumer resin (PCR) and recycled content.

Some customers come to us with a bottle design, and Amcor will then need to work out how to create that packaging. Others will launch a product, but have no idea of what the packaging should look like. Our teams at the global innovation centers, such as those in China, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Belgium, can design rigid and flexible packaging that aligns with the customer brand and can be manufactured at scale and efficiently, thanks to our expert in-house knowledge, skills and experience.

Creating the right bottle (or package) can be technically challenging. As we work ahead of the curve for customers, especially those who require solutions that do not already exist, we pride ourselves on creating containers that combine utility with recyclability. The Amcor PowerPost™ technology is a great example of this – next-generation technology that delivers a more sustainable bottle, a better consumer experience and a 30% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional products.

This latest technology from Amcor Rigid Packaging (ARP) exceeds market standards by delivering a bottle that is up to 30% lighter and can be made with 100% PCR. Thanks to our experience and knowledge in rigid plastics, the team has actively displaced the vacuum in the container after filling, delivering a bottle that is lighter, reducing energy requirements and lowering the carbon footprint.

Collaboration is also equally important. Earlier this year, ARP and Danone launched a 100% recyclable bottle for the Villavicencio water brand, exclusively manufactured for the market in Argentina. This new label-less bottle is made from 100% PCR and can be recycled over and over, supporting our long-term vision for a circular economy.

Regardless of the product space and sector, what matters most is supporting our customers’ sustainability goals, which may include advancing to 100% recycled content. We recognize that there are always challenges to creating more sustainable packaging, but Amcor is committed to investing, innovating and collaborating to help shape the future of packaging.

Innovation is an important pillar for achieving a circular economy, equally as important as waste infrastructure and consumer participation. We’re proud to be a leading voice in the packaging industry as we work toward achieving a circular economy for both ourselves and our customers.
