This alliance will facilitate the development of sustainable packaging with the new REVOLOOPTM brand high-density polyethylene (HDPE or HDPE) PCR resin, transformed by Enka with the latest technology from recycled bottle caps and labels and under the formulation specially developed by Dow.

  • In line with their sustainability strategy, Dow and Enka signed a three-year supply agreement that will allow them to continue advancing in the production of more sustainable packaging in the country with the manufacture of REVOLOOPTM recycled high-density polyethylene resin, suitable for flexible packaging.
  • This product allows both companies to offer a circular solution for different industries by transforming PET bottle caps and labels, thus closing the cycle of this material and promoting environmental protection.
  • The manufacture of this resin will transform close to 2,500 tons of polyolefins annually in the country, positively impacting the recycling sector.

Bogota, June 8th, 2023. Enka, a leading company in the recycling of PET bottles in Colombia with a focus on circular economy, innovation and high engineering, in alliance with Dow, experts in materials science, with a strong strategy of sustainability and circularity of plastics, announce to the market, after successful tests with several customers, the signing of a three-year supply agreement for the production of recycled post-consumer resin PCR (Post Consumer Resin) that will revolutionize the Colombian market.

This alliance will facilitate the development of sustainable packaging with the new REVOLOOPTM brand high-density polyethylene (HDPE or HDPE) PCR resin, transformed by Enka with the latest technology from recycled bottle caps and labels and under the formulation specially developed by Dow. This REVOLOOPTM resin is a sustainable offer for high-performance flexible packaging applications that can be used mainly by major brands of household care and cleaning products.

This development is a major step towards mobilizing the plastic recycling sector in Colombia, and the creation of new packaging based on circularity processes. With this alliance, the reduction of nearly 2,500 tons of plastic waste generated in the country per year will be achieved. The production of this post-consumer resin, compared to virgin or first-use material, generates great benefits for the planet, reducing the impact on the carbon footprint and the consumption of water and energy.

With this new PCR resin, the company seeks to continue building circular models in which more companies can incorporate these benefits into their value chain. Likewise, one of the purposes of Dow and Enka as leaders in the packaging and recycling industry is to connect and work with all the allies in the chain, such as recyclers and recycling associations, NGOs and government, to ensure the scalability of this type of projects.

"Through collaboration and the pooling of knowledge we seek to transform the living conditions of thousands of Colombian families. Enka has the largest PET bottle collection network in Colombia, with a presence in 30 departments and more than 900 municipalities. The manufacture of PCR resin and the start-up of the new Bottle-to-Bottle PET recycling plant, which makes us one of the largest plants in the world, will undoubtedly have an impact on improving and placing recycling and separation at source more and more on the public agenda. For Enka, this alliance with Dow is not only a technological breakthrough, but also a great impact on social and sustainability issues", says Álvaro Hincapié, Enka's President.

PCR resin is part of the REVOLOOPTM family, a brand through which Dow is amplifying the offer of post-consumer recycled plastics in Latin America and globally, by collaborating with partners with solid experience in the waste and recycling industries. In Colombia, the ideal partner for this long-term alliance was Enka, the company with the best recycling technology in Colombia, which made it possible to develop a high-quality product.

"As we strengthen partnerships within the value chain, we are making the greatest progress in plastics circularity. Through innovation and collaboration, we are together promoting the transformation of waste into valuable materials. At Dow, we believe that together with Enka, recycling and the circular economy continue to grow and materialize in Colombia and the region". Maria Paulina Sandoval Sustainability Manager for Dow in the region.
