Western U.S. sawmills in March produced 1.215 billion board ft. (bbf) of softwood lumber, down 11.5% from March 2022, when output was 1.372 bbf, but up 20.5% compared with February’s 1.008 bbf, according to the latest figures from the Western Wood Products Assn. (WWPA) of Portland, Oregon. Coastal mills contributed 774 mmbf to the March total, down 11.8% from March 2022’s 878 million board ft. (mmbf), but increased 23.2% from February’s 628 mmbf, while Inland mills accounted for 383 mmbf in March, down 13.7% from March 2022’s 444 mmbf but 14.8% higher than February’s 334 mmbf. California coast production in March increased 15.5% year-over-year and rose 24.9% month-over-month to 58 mmbf. Western U.S softwood lumber inventories in March, at 1.342 bbf, were up 8.3% year-over-year. Western lumber mills in March produced at 76% of practical capacity, declining from 85% in March 2022 but up from 72% in February.
