Western U.S. sawmills in January produced 1.104 billion board ft. (bbf) of softwood lumber, a decrease of 3.3% from January 2023 when output was 1.142 bbf, but 13.0% higher than December’s 977 million board ft. (mmbf), according to the latest figures from the Western Wood Products Assn. (WWPA) of Portland, Oregon. Coastal mills contributed 665 mmbf to the January total, down 5.1% from January 2023’s 701 mmbf and up 12.4% from December’s 592 mmbf, while Inland mills accounted for 375 mmbf in January, 4.1% lower than January 2023’s 391 mmbf but 14.5% higher than December’s 327 mmbf. California coast production in January increased 27.9% year-over-year and 10.4% month-over-month to 64 mmbf. Western U.S softwood lumber inventories in January, at 1.283 bbf, decreased 1.8% year-over-year. Western lumber mills in January produced at 71% of practical capacity, down from 77% in January 2023 and 72% in December.
