Western U.S. sawmills in February produced 1.119 billion board ft. (bbf) of softwood lumber, an increase of 9.4% from February 2023 when output was 1.023 bbf, and 1.2% higher than January’s 1.106 bbf, according to the latest figures from the Western Wood Products Assn. (WWPA) of Portland, Oregon. Coastal mills contributed 709 million board ft. (mmbf) to the February total, up 11.9% from February 2023’s 634 mmbf and up 6.2% from January’s 668 mmbf, while Inland mills accounted for 381 mmbf in February, 12.7% higher than February 2023’s 338 mmbf and 1.7% higher than January’s 375 mmbf. California coast production in February decreased 42.9% year-over-year and 54.2% month-over-month to 29 mmbf. Western U.S softwood lumber inventories in February, at 1.276 bbf, decreased 3.2% year-over-year. Western lumber mills in February produced at 76% of practical capacity, up from 72% in February 2023 and 71% in January.
