This year, on 7 September, the forest sector education event Latvijas Finieris Green Class in Rēzekne Municipality, Vērēmi Rural Territory, Sarkaņkalns brought together 172 classes from 30 schools – 2000 primary school pupils and teachers. The event is an annual tradition to bring together young people from the Latgale region and professionals from companies and organisations involved in forestry, education and national defence at the start of the school year, giving pupils the opportunity to gain theoretical and practical knowledge about various processes related to Latvian land management. Throughout the day, young people had the opportunity to learn about forests, the trees and animals they contain, the sustainable management of these natural assets and the wood export products that form the basis of Latvia's economy. Pupils had the opportunity to explore and try out forest fire protection, forest management and agricultural machinery, learn about opportunities to study forest-related specialities, take their first steps in learning about national conservation processes, and learn how to plant their own tree. "We have been organising the event in Sarkaņkalns since 2019, and the interest of schools in learning about the forest sector during the first excursion of an exciting school year is constantly growing,” says Arnis Krancāns, one of the main organisers of the event and member of the Management Board of the Latvijas Finieris Foundation for Sustainable Development. “Many thanks to all the representatives of the 34 different information stops for their enthusiasm and energy to show up, talk about their work, and give pupils the opportunity to take part in various games and creative activities. We are very happy to see so many teachers appreciating the event and arranging visits for their classes. This is a great opportunity to learn together with pupils, in a fun and interactive way, how to take care of our country's great treasure – the Latvian land – and how to manage it wisely. See you next year in the Latvijas Finieris Green Class!” This year, the following companies were represented at the information stops: JSC Latvia's State Forests (LVM), LVM Nature Park in Tērvete, LVM Kalsnava Arboretum, Latvian State Forest Research Institute “Silava”, Latvian State Institute of Wood Chemistry, Forest and Wood Products Research and Development Institute, Ogre Technical School, Faculty of Forest and Environmental Sciences of Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies, Rēzekne Academy of Technology, LBTU Malnava College, MIKC Latgale Music and Art High School, NG 32nd Infantry Battalion, US Army's Civil Affair Team, State Forest Service, Nature Conservation Agency, Latvian Forest Industry Federation, Latvian Forest Owners' Association, Forest Department of Ministry of Agriculture, Forest Advisory Service Centre, Association Meža konsultants, Latvian Luge Sports Federation, SIA Meža birža, SIA ALAAS, SIA Latgran, SIA VMF Latvia, SIA Sodra Latvia. Information on the next date of the event will be published on the Sarkaņkalns website www.sarkankalns.lv by the end of the year. Last year, the Latvijas Finieris Green Class gathered more than 1200 children. Sarkaņkalns is an educational and active recreation site owned by Latvijas Finieris in the Rēzekne Municipality, Vērēmi Rural Territory, less than 10 km from the city of Rēzekne. Since 2018, it has been managed by the Latvijas Finieris Foundation for Sustainable Development, which is actively involved in shaping public opinion on the rational use of land and sustainable human interaction with the environment. The foundation aims to raise awareness and knowledge of the opportunities and resources offered by Latvia's nature, as well as persistent and respectful work, resulting in a long chain of values that is the driving force not only for many families, farms or businesses, but also for the development of the country as a whole.
