April 6, 2023 (press release) –

Kährs Group has reduced its carbon dioxide emissions by 63 per cent compared with the base year 2020 – the climate goal for 2025 and reduction according to the roadmap of science-based target initiative, already achieved well and beyond.

Kährs has committed to ambitious near- and long-term emission reductions with goals set in connection with the issuance of Kährs sustainability-linked bond in 2021 and the A-rated sustainability framework:

• Reduce its carbon dioxide emissions from operations (scope 1 and 2) with 40% by 2025, compared to 2020, that was set as base year.
• Become carbon dioxide neutral in all scopes by 2040 at the latest, in line with science-based targets contributing to meeting the 1.5-degree target defined in the Paris Agreement.

With an emissions reduction of 63% from 2020 to 2022, emissions have already been more than halved, three years earlier than what was set as an initial ambition. Kährs has therefore decided to raise its ambitions further with a goal of becoming carbon neutral within its own operations already 2030.

Kährs has climate as a priority and hence has focused on a lot of initiatives to be able to lower its carbon emissions, such as transitioning to renewable energy at production sites, changing to fossil free internal transportation, biobased heating and very comprehensive energy saving programs at the production sites.

“I am happy to see the implemented changes and progress in our business units to reduce carbon dioxide emissions within our own operations. I look forward to continuing the work and we are proceeding within the framework of the Science Based Targets initiative, to get our ambitious targets verified based on our mapping, and together with our suppliers continue influence the emissions within Scope 3,” says Johan Magnusson, CEO of Kährs Group.

“I am proud of our work with science-based targets and our commitments and plan on how to get there, which is an important milestone towards reaching our sustainability goals. SBTi provides a common, robust, and science-based understanding of net-zero, which clarifies and gives us confidence that our targets are aligned with climate science. We have made dedicated efforts in line with our ambitious goal of becoming carbon neutral in our own operations already 2030. Now we will validate our targets and get the roadmap in place, and our customers can trust that we will match their ambitions and targets,” says Therese Gerdman, Global Sustainability Manager, Kährs Group.

About the Science Based Targets initiative
Kährs has committed to near- and long-term emissions reduction targets to be carbon neutral by 2030 and to reach science-based net-zero target by 2040. Kährs can thereby ensure that its climate actions are in line with the latest science. By reducing its CO2 emissions (Greenhouse Gas Emissions calculated as carbon dioxide equivalents, CO2e) throughout the value chain, Kährs contributes to meeting the 1.5-degree target defined in the Paris Agreement.

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a global body enabling businesses to set ambitious emissions reductions targets in line with the latest climate science. It is focused on accelerating companies across the world to halve emissions before 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions before 2050.

The initiative is a collaboration between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI) and the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF) and one of the We Mean Business Coalition commitments. The SBTi defines and promotes best practice in science-based target setting, offers resources and guidance to reduce barriers to adoption, and independently assesses and approves companies’ targets. www.sciencebasedtargets.org
