NEW YORK , January 15, 2024 (press release) –

The UN has officially recognized the importance of natural plant fibres in sustainable development through Resolution 78/169, a landmark step for the global natural fibres community. This resolution emphasises the potential of natural fibres to aid in poverty eradication, food security, and climate action. It calls for increased investment in the production and processing of these fibres, and signals a growing global recognition of the sustainability benefits of these materials. The resolution is expected to have a positive impact on farmers, small businesses, and consumers worldwide.

The Discover Natural Fibres Initiative is proud that the UN refers to the definition of natural fibres developed by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations during the International Year of Natural Fibres 2009, which was the starting point for DNFI.org.

Key points of UN Resolution 78/169:

  • Natural fibres are crucial for sustainable development due to their renewability, biodegradability, and lower environmental impact compared to synthetic fibres.
  • Additionally, the production and processing of natural fibres can aid in poverty eradication and food security by providing employment and income opportunities for farmers and rural communities.
  • Furthermore, natural fibres can play a role in mitigating climate change. Plants absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and can be used to produce products that reduce our reliance on fossil fuels.
