Tokyo, Japan, July 12, 2023 – Toray Industries, Inc., announced today that wholly owned Korean subsidiary Toray Advanced Materials Korea Inc. has obtained ISCC PLUS certification for the polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) resin  produced at its Gunsan plant. The International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) is an independent multi-stakeholder initiative and leading certification system supporting sustainable, fully traceable, deforestation-free and climate-friendly supply chains.

ISCC PLUS certification ensures that recycled raw materials and biomass raw materials are properly managed in the supply chain in mass-balance method production.
This certification enables Toray Advanced Materials Korea to produce and supply PPS resins incorporating raw materials made from biomass naphtha and pyrolysis oil from waste plastics allocated using mass balance method with the same attributes as fossil-derived PPS resins. Preparations are underway for mass production to start.

The Toray Group is the world’s biggest integrated PPS manufacturer, handling broadly  from polymers and compounds to fibers and films. Toray Advanced Materials Korea and Toray’s Tokai Plant in Aichi Prefecture, Japan, have the world’s largest combined PPS polymerization capacity.  Toray Advanced Materials Korea supplies PPS resins to Group compounding sites in China, Europe, the United States, and Southeast Asia.

Toray is also in the process of acquiring this certification at the Tokai Plant through mass balance method and will build a global supply structure for eco-friendly PPS resins by developing supply setups at compounding sites in the countries, in which it operates to meet customer requirements for biomass and recycled raw materials and reduce its carbon footprint.

A world in which people manage resources sustainably by 2050 is one goal of Toray Group Sustainability Vision. Toray will keep catering to customer demand for environmentally friendly resins in keeping with its corporate philosophy of contributing to society by creating new value.
