What an exciting time to exhibit at HD EXPO in Las Vegas, last month. Attendance appears to have returned to pre-pandemic levels and there was a lot of enthusiasm for new and sustainable products. Our luxury, high performance Ultrasuede® HP material was a hit among buyers and specifiers, especially those seeking out upholstery covers and wallcoverings featuring a green story. Plant-based composition In 2015, Toray began incorporating partially plant-based polyester in the production of its high performance material, using polyester polymerized with ethylene glycol made from waste molasses in sugarcane processing — which still accounts for approximately 14 percent of the total material composition. Plant-based ingredients like these replace non-renewable petroleum-based ingredients. High Performance Ultrasuede Ideally suited Considering all of the performance requirements for the contract and hospitality sectors, designers can be confident when specifying Ultrasuede® HP for any type of interior design application, from upholstered seating or headboards to walls. Ultrasuede Applications New options One wall of the booth featuring Ultrasuede® HP was designed to illustrate the material’s compatibility with secondary processes, in this case screen printing, as well to demonstrate its effectiveness as a wall covering that requires no additional backing before gluing directly onto the surface. Wall shelves were added to showcase products from product categories such as fashion and footwear, helping to spark interest and ideas for a myriad of applications using Ultrasuede®. Interior designers and furniture manufacturers may request complimentary Ultrasuede® HP swatches by writing Helen Brier at helen.brier.b6@mail.toray. At the contract furnishings and hospitality design trade show, we were excited to announce the composition of Ultrasuede® HP is now made up of 30 percent plant-based ingredients, with the successful addition of plant-based polyurethane. The polyurethane is composed of polyol made from the non-edible castor-oil plant (Ricinus communis).
Ultrasuede® HP exceeds several of the material standards contract furnishings and hospitality design industries, including cleanability, durability, and light fastness. In several tests, Ultrasuede® HP outperforms natural leather by exceeding 200,000 Wyzenbeek double-rubs, and superior “color fastness to crocking” and “colorfastness to light” testing, such as AATCC 8 (Wet procedure - Class 5.0; Dry procedure - Class 5.0) and AATCC 16H (Class 5.0).
An updated booth design at HD EXPO highlighted 14 new Ultrasuede® HP colors among the 97 solids and two prints available in five colorways each. The new colors include Dark Navy, Blue Daisy, Silver Grey, Ice Blue, Deep Lilac, Rose Quartz, Parchment, Berry Rose, Clove, Sunflower, Carbon Grey, Lotus Green, Crystal, Natural Tan.
